The number in parentheses following the course title indicates the number of credits granted for successful completion of that course. The numbers 7-8-9-10-11-12 following the course description indicate the grades in which these courses are generally taken. Final placement in English, foreign language, science, and mathematics courses will be determined by the school on the basis of scores on Admission Tests and/or grade in previously taken courses in that subject area. Each student is required to purchase a Modern Language Association (MLA) style book to be used in preparing formal papers. English 7 A study of the language arts-including writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills with additional instruction on library and study skills. Prereq.=none English 8 A study of the language arts-including writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills with additional instruction on research. Prereq.=none English 9 A basic course in communication skills, including grammar, composition, study skills, and literature appreciation. Prereq.=none Composition A study of writing and rhetorical skills including both expository and creative composition and basics of library research. Prereq.=Eng. 10 (9-10) Honors Composition American Literature A course studying the development of American literature from the discovery of America to present, examining its historical, social, philosophical and psychological implications. Prereq.=Composition (10-11) Honors American Literature English Literature An historical and philosophical survey of the literature of England from Beowulf through the 20th Century, including a study of the development of the English language. Prereq.=Composition and American Lit. (11-12) Speech A study of effective formal oral communications, including impromptu, informative, persuasive, special occasion speeches, and concluding with debate. Speech science will also be studied. Prereq.=none (10-12) Advanced Placement English(H) or College Reading and Composition Students are involved in the study and practice of speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills with special emphasis on refining their literary discernment, advanced writing, and critical thinking skills.
