Gavin, a kindergardener at Faith Lutheran School in Vista, CaliforniaMy name is Ember Garrett and I am contacting you regarding a very special little boy. His name is Gavin. He is 5 and he is currently battling brain cancer. He is a kindergardener at Faith Lutheran School in Vista, Ca.
Gavin was first diagnosed with brain cancer in May 2008 when he was 3. His tumor was removed in June. The cancer recurred by October 2008. After that he received proton therapy. After that, God blessed us with almost a full year cancer free! Unfortunately, Gavin returned to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital just before Christmas for a follow up MRI that revealed a new tumor located in a very delicate area of the brain called the Circle of Willis. None of Gavin's doctors are able to say what kind of cancer this is or how to treat it. Everyone is just guessing. Currently, Gavin is receiving full cranial and spinal radiation five days a week (Mon - Fri). The little trooper is still heading to school once the radiation is finished. The potential side effects of this radiation can be devastating and will include cognitive impairment.
I am writing you because as Gavin was preparing to head to St. Jude for his last MRI he asked me if I thought people would make cards for him this time. It is as if he knew his cancer had returned. I don't doubt this as Gavin has told us all about his angel that he talks to. I honestly believe that God has allowed Gavin to talk with his angle during these rough times.
The students at Gavin's school made cards for him and sent them to the hospital for him while he was in the ICU after his tumor was removed. But, now that he is back in school the cards have stopped. He is still fighting and he still has a long way to go. I am writing as many educators as I can locate to ask them if they would be willing to have their students make cards for Gavin and his older brother Caleb (7). As I am sure you can imagine this has been a hard journey for both boys.
These are two of the sweetest children you could ever meet. They are typical little boys who love to tell jokes, play Star Wars, Bakugon or Transformers. They love their pets (2 cats, Alex and Max and a Chinchilla, Smokey) and they love taking Tae Kwon Do as a family with their parents.
Please feel free to share Gavin's story with your students. If they feel they would like to make cards to send him I am sure he would love to receive them. Since I haven't asked his parents for permission to give out his address I am giving you my work address. You can send them to my attention at the address below.
